What is a Phylactery?

Phylactery

Do you know what Phylactery is? Actually I had to search to find out what is a phylactery because honestly this is the first time I’ve heard about it. I was reading a Yahoo news when I saw this article about another airline scare happened today. A passenger saw a phylactery from a teenage boy while in mid-flight and alerted the crew. Phylactery, an article of clothing on the teenage boy was feared by some passengers to be a bomb.

US Airways flight from New York to Louisville was diverted to Philadelphia. Once the plane is safely on the gorund, authorities search the plane and questioned the boy. It was quickly found that there is no bomb and it was just a false alarm. No arrest has been made.

Wikipedia describes Phylactery as a Greek term for tefillin, leather boxes worn on the arm and head during certain Jewish services like the picture on the left.

This most recent scare clearly highlights the need for more cultural understanding. However, it isn’t the first time an innocent gesture has sent flyers into a full-blown alert. Following the Christmas Day scare in which a passenger tried to detonate a bomb on a flight, there have been several false alarms.

Remember last week when a man sneaked into a secure area of Newark airport to give his girlfriend a last kiss shutdown the whole airport for hours and caused massive delay in flights? I think security isn’t as consistent as it should be. there will be days that security will be so tight then there will be days that it will be lax.

In some airports, security is so tight that they are violating people’s rights. Good thing I never experience those horror stories and I hope it will never happen to me.

  1. 13.1–10; 13.11–16; Deut. 6.4–9; 11.13–21. One box is fastened to the forehead and the other to the left arm; they are intended to serve as a reminder of the constant presence of God and of the need to keep Him uppermost in one’s thoughts and deeds, thereby safeguarding the wearer against committing a sin. They are not worn on the Sabbath or holy days, since these days are in themselves a reminder of God. Phylacteries are also called tephillin [Aramaic,=attachment].

  2. Actually, this is also the first time I have encountered this term Phylactery. Sometimes, people are being arrested for the way they dress and the way they look.It really important to know the culture so that we wouldn’t easily be judging our neighbors.

  3. I think if more people looked about how other people’s customs are, there would not be so many upsets about different kinds of garments.

  4. Nicholas from Chicago Custom Shirts says:

nice post, i had no idea what those were but i’d heard the name before. i think what people wear is their business and i try not to worry about it too much, but it is good to stay knowledgeable about different cultures.

  5. Justin from Sierra Security says:

People wearing that kind of dress in the picture are sometimes being accused of Phylactery ( the first time I heard and use it) which is not fair to the others.
Justin@Sierra Security´s last [type] ..Hello world!

  6. Your website is true to its name. I had no idea what phylactery was either, so thanks for the info! Do you think it’s a shame that people are stereotyped as much as they are like this?
