Undelete Files from formatted Flash Drive and Memory Card

R-Linux Undelete Unformat

Did you format a flash drive before or deleted a file from a memory card then you want it back? Yesterday my dad accidentally formatted the 2GB SD card on his Canon S2 IS digital camera. He was checking out some settings and for some reason formatted the memory card. Good thing he told me right away and didn’t use the memory card or else the chance of getting the pictures will be less. Deleting your files in your hard drive (even if you empty your recycle bin) flash drive or even memory card doesn’t really delete it per se. It only free up the space and makes it available for the next files. So if you delete your files or even formatted your thumb drive, your files are still there. You just need an application to find it and make it accessible again.

Going back to my story, the hundreds of pictures that my dad accidentally formatted is priceless. I am not worried though because I’ve recovered many thumb drives before but you can never be sure that you’ll get all the files or even half of the files. Firing up Google, I’ve searched for a free application that will unformat the SD card. I’ve checked about a dozen of applications when I remembered Download.com so I’ve searched there and after a couple of tries, I finally found what I’m looking for.

R-Linux Free Recovery 3.0 saves the day. R-Linux is a free data recovery and undelete utility for Ext2FS/3FS (Linux) file systems. File recovery after power failure, system crash, virus infection or partition reformation, even for the different file system. Unformat and unerase tool. The utility creates image files an entire disk, partition or its part. Such drive image can be processed like regular drive. Recognition and parsing of Dynamic (Windows 2000/XP), Basic and BSD (UNIX) partitions layout schema. Localized names support. Recovered files can be saved on any (including network) disks accessible by the host operating system.

At first I was hesitant because of its name. I thought it only works with Linux files but no it works with Windows file system too. It has a simple interface and scanning is faser than most recovery programs I’ve tried before. Best of all, its not a trial program, it is completely free. The process from scanning and recovering about a hundred pictures from the 2GB SD card took less than 15 minutes.

Now I got like hundred brownie points from my dad. The feeling is also priceless after seeing my dad’s face brighten up when I told him I got every single picture back and transferred it to his laptop. So the best thing I can do right now is to tell every one about this little nifty free program I’ve use yesterday that recovered priceless pictures from their trip to Palawan.

The picture on the left is one of the actual images I’ve recovered using R-Linux Free undelete program. You can download it for free at Download.com and to save you the trouble searching for it, here is the actual link to download R-Linux.

I hope it helps someone out there trying to recover some files that they accidentally deleted or some files from accidentally formatted flash drives or memory cards.

Just one piece of advice, do not use the drive that you want to recover files from to give you a better chance of recovering all the files you accidentally deleted.

I had a similar issue before but that was with my MP3 being infected my a virus (Conficker) though I was able to recover the files using a file recovery software similar to the one above.

I was able to disinfect the player too from the virus.

I had a similar experience few week ago and after Googling the net I come across two excellent recovery applications ; Recuva and Pandorra. They are also doing a great job when it comes to recovering accidentally deleted files. Nice post :)

This is a great resource that anyone with a flash drive should be informed of. It is often easy to misplace or accidentally remove important data so you want to be able to recover it when you need it.

I know about Data Recovery softwares and I’ve used them in the past for some purposes but up recently I was working and had put my lots of hours into a work and that file accidentally got deleted…and the worst part was that I didn’t even take backup of that file otherwise usually I do take backups but that was it. I tried 2-3 different data recovery softwares after a very long time…and as it was a text file, it was much harder to find as well. Only my last try was to try Seagate’s Data Recovery software, my harddrive is of Seagate as well so I thought the chances of recovery is higher, it searched for hundreds of thousands of text files and then I let Windows Search do the job for me…gladly after so much trouble…I found that file and recovered it completely! Nothing felt better than that.

One should regular backups of their important and priceless data and also of their flash drives and memory cards, as they’re more prone to viruses and crashes.

i have a traveldrive that i use all the time. all of a sudden it says that i need to format the traveldrive in order to use it. i know that if i format it, i’ll lose everything on it but i can’t even access the traveldrive. what should i do?

    • ZXT says:

Most probably the drive itself is malfunctioning already. If you can not access the drive then your best bet is to format it and use a recovery software. Formatting doesn’t erase the files, it only marks the space as available. So unless you put another file there, your previous file/s are still there and available for recovery.

It is really frustrating if you lose all your data. This happened to me and I want to beat myself up for reformatting my flash drive. It is really necessary to have a back up of all your files in case this happens.

  14. Sometimes cheap flash drives cannot save the data properly. It shows the data but when you try to open it, it says error. So I suggest to buy a decent flash drive to avoid losing your data.

    Hi,

Using a tool such as this is not a foolproof method of recovering lost data, instead perform regular backups and do away with the hassle of using such tools.

  16. Susanne from offsite backup says:

I must agree losing files carrying years of important data can give you a heart attack. I have suffered the same fate when I gave my usb to a friend for their personal use. She brought it back corrupted and I had to format it. I was wondering if there are other reliable source of data backup other than usbs? Can you please suggest some? Thanks!
