Serena down and out at US Open

Serena Williams loses her match with Kim Clijsters in the semi finals match at US open without lifting a racket. How? Because she blew up and loses her cool when an umpire called a foot fault late in the game and Serena threatened and throw expletives to the line umpire.

After the line judge called the foot fault with Serena serving at 5-6, 15-30 in the second set, Serena gave a head to foot  stare before cursing, screaming and finger pointed at the official. Serena looked like going to serve but the line umpire was called by the chair umpire and Serena continues the barrage of not-safe-for-work words. Then rules officials were summoned, a brief conversation occurred and Serena was clearly heard saying “I didn’t say I would kill you, are you serious?” and it was determined that Serena would be assessed a point penalty for a conduct violation. The point gave Clijsters the match and Serena walk over to Kim to shake her hands.

Based on the replay, it was hard to tell if the foot fault that gave her a double fault in the crucial stage of the match was indeed a foot fault. Nonetheless Serena’s berating the official is a no no. A lot of profanities, threatening, screaming and finger pointing happened and Williams clearly crossed that line figuratively and maybe even literally.

In my opinion, Serena was about to lose the match anyways with Kim paying great all night, maybe she just can’t wait a couple of minutes more. I think assessing a point to her opponent was the right thing to do, match point or not. What is your opinion? Do you think Serena deserves the penalty? How about the line judge, you think she deserved the barrage of profanities too? Yes bottom line is Kim deserves her win and she’s about to win anyways before Serena goes ballistic.

Serena would have definitely lost the match anyway. Whether or not it was a bad call is not the issue. Someone who displays sportsman like conduct may get upset that it is a bad call and argue about it, but they don’t curse out and threaten the judge who made it. Plus, it wasn’t even the first foot fault of the game. She had violated the rule earlier, so it comes as no surprise they would be looking out for it.

I played sports for a long time, not even close to the level that Serena plays at and honestly I respect her passion. If something gets the best of you it gets the best of you.

You hit the nail right in the head Kristi. Serena can argue but she crossed the line by cursing and throwing profanities. She should have just approach the chair umpire if she thinks the call was wrong. Her post interview never mentioned that she is sorry even after she admitted that she let her emotions do the talking.
