I get more spam comments than real useful comments. I have tried to used several types of captcha plugins before and they all were effective except that the real commenters find them inconvenient and annoying. Finally, things seem to look better when I used Captcha Free. This plugin filters bot spam internally and doesn’t need to display captcha visually. Seems like it times the comment submission. Comments submitted within split seconds are possible only with bots and so they are caught by the plugin.
I still am not using Akismet. I don’t know exactly why I seem averse to using it. Perhaps, someday when the spam becomes really unbearable and the captcha free plugin is no longer enough, then perhaps I’ll give Akismet a try. James Moralde´s last blog ..First 100 Dollar Earning Online
Some of them are getting a little more clever with their spam-copy; I’ve almost been fooled once or twice, and I let one in on cleverness alone (fully knowing it was spam, but giving them credit for their unusually creative and personalized approach). I do check the links to be sure they aren’t going to p*** sites or pop-up hell. And 99.9% won’t make it out of the pending or spam bucket unless I’m severely caffeine- and sleep-deprived. (Hate it when that happens, too – I think they get little alarm beepers going on their Sucker Meter, and realize they’ve made it through the first circle of Moderator Hell, and put my blog down under “Ripe for the Pickin’” – but I have my ways of getting even. I’m even meaner to people who rip off my posts:

Oh, yes – here’s one (it’s funny because (a) the blog WAS having problems loading, so it’s quite likely this was left by a real human being, but it’s impossible to tell for sure; and (b) I like monkeys):

Oh, and this – because although it is shameless flattery and does not prove the commenter has read a darned thing, it doesn’t stand out as being an obvious spam comment unless you check the links:
“Thanks for these good tips! I’ve been reading your blog for awhile now and would like to thank you for all the good suggestions, different perspectives, and helpful links that you post. Looking forward to more in the coming year.”
Isn’t that sweet? I mean, really, if you’re going to spam people, at least put some real thought into it and be nice. (I love the ones that take the opposite approach and say things like, “Interesting post, but u r wrong” and don’t say why – just leave 27 links to sites purporting to sell various meds without need of a doctor’s prescription.) Well, if you’re engaged in a massive linking campaign, the use of bots makes it easy. I suppose the “quality factor” is out of the equation here, it’s just a matter of survival rate of the links.
We have a serious problem with no easy solution. It’s not an easy task to mantain the quality of the forums.

One of my favorite things about blogging is reading the spam comments, I have even posted a few of them which have sparked some good discussions. I guess all bloggers face the same problem. Thank god because askimet capable to help us filter the spam comments. Although I received a lot of spam comments I do check them all to make there are no real comment left in it.
The other plugin that helps is WP Spam free. The biggest problem with WP Spam free is that it filters out people that are actual real people commenting and doesn’t even give me a chance to save their comment.
So for now I’m only using Akismet. Since I am also do follow (and will always be) and have comment luv I believe it won’t be too long before spammmers start to spam my blog.
I might install Wp spam free if Spam becomes too much of a problem.

Hi Eren, I never use anything aside from Akismet becauseI think I don’t have too. Even when I got more than 100 spam in one day, not one got away with Akismet. You got a great blog and by the way, I’m following you now in Twitter.
I will try to scan through Akismet for wrongfully capture comments but always a quick scan. The spammers have indeed working ‘hard’ to make them looked real. You can do a copy/paste check whether the same comment appeared on other sites using Google. I have no tolerance for spammers, also for link droppers.

Yes Akistmet catches 99 percent of those and that makes life easier for us bloggers.
Akismet catching most of the spam comments, its 99% Accurate.
