MMA Pound for Pound

Mixed Martial Arts or MMA is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques. MMA has been around since the turn of the previous century so it’s been a hundred years already since people mixed their fighting style in competition.

Mixed martial arts can be traced back to various mixed style contests that took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s.

Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC promotes the modern MMA fighting competition. It began in 1993 with minimal or no rules at all. Fighters fight with bare hands and almost all striking can be done like headbutts, foot stomps to the head, knees to the opponent head while down, etc. There is no weight class too. Everyone fights everybody and it’s not unusual to  see a 175 pound fighter competes with 300 pound MMA warrior.

Later on, through the years, UFC started adding safety rules for their own MMA fighters. Open gloves is mandatory so no more bare fist fighting. Weight classes introduced too from light weight (155 pounds below) to heavy weight (225 pounds to 265 pounds) for a total of 5 weight classes.

MMA Pound for pound fighter is what everyone considered to be the best in all weight classes. Meaning if the person is fighting with the same weight class with anyone then he will still win the fight or something to that effect. For example if a 170 pound fighter rated to be the best pound for pound then his talent and skills beats even the 225 pound heavyweight fighter if he himself is a heavyweight fighter.

There are three current MMA fighters that can be considered as best pound for pound today in my opinion. Anderson Silva, Georges St. Pierre and BJ Penn.
