Kim “the impossible” Clijsters wins the U.S. Open in just her third tournament just a month after coming back from 2 1/2 years of retirement and 1 and a half years after giving birth to her daughter.
She is a former no.1 but the 26-year-old Clijsters is unranked and unseeded in this tournament because she hasn’t played enough matches to be ranked, and she needed a wild card to get into the tournament. She’s the first woman not in the top 10 of the WTA rankings to win the U.S. Open.
Kim Clijster completed her comeback Sunday night by beating No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 7-5, 6-3 on to become the first mother to win a Grand Slam title since Evonne Goolagong Cawley at Wimbledon in 1980. It’s Clijsters’ second major championship—she also won at Flushing Meadows in 2005, her last appearance at the Open.
The win put behind the awkward feeling she got when she won the semi finals match with Serena Williams in unusual fashion when Serena penalized for a point (match point) after going ballistic with the line judge.
“This has been so exciting for me,” she said. “I just wanted to start three tournaments just to get back into the rhythm of playing tennis and get used to the surroundings.
“I don’t have words for this. I am just glad I got to come back and defend my title from 2005. Winning the first one has helped me to keep my nerves at the end.”
Kim Clijster started her professional career at the age of 14 in 1997 and got the no.1 position in 2003 at the age of 20. She retired in May 2007 citing injuries and to start a family life before unretiring last month. It think Kim will get more titles in her bag before retiring for good. What do you think? I didn’t watch the match since it was played during night (our time), had they only follow the original schedule, then I would have watched it (since it was played in the weekend then) – but due to rain, as you know, semifinals were postponed and hence final too.
I was hoping for Wozniacki to win, but she’s so young that I’m sure she will get many more attempts to win it, the performance shown by Clijster makes it a fair victory, cadeau to her.
