Increase Alexa Ranking
Just how essential is Alexa Ranking for your blog? How a better Alexa ranking will earn you more money? Well it depends who you ask. Personally I never cared for Alexa as I am not a fan of tool bars and the less programs runs in the background in my computer the better. If you run ads in blog or website, a high Alexa ranking will attract more advertisers and the better the ranking the more advertisers will be interested in advertising on your site and you will make money.
Here are 8 ways to improve your Alexa ranking based on tips from friend blogs and some that I gathered around the internet. Right now my ranking is 16,966,271 and this blog is just about a week old. I am following these 8 tips and I will give an update to see if these tips works or not. My target is to get under the 1 million mark in 30 days.
Don’t forget that good content will bring audience and visitors regularly that will eventually help your ranking with Alexa but for the meantime try these 8 tips and see for yourself.
1. Install the Alexa toolbar so you help your blog ranking every time you visit your own blog. Do this to all of your computers (home, office, laptop, etc) This is the easiest and most basic step.
2. Encourage others to use the Alexa toolbar. This includes friends, fellow webmasters as well as site visitors/blog readers. Be sure to link to Alexa’s full explanation of their toolbar and tracking system so your readers know what installing the toolbar or extension entails.
3. Write or Blog about Alexa. Webmaster and bloggers love to hear about ways to increase their Alexa rank. They’ll link to you and send you targeted traffic (i.e. visitors with the toolbar already installed). This is what I’m doing right now.
4. Parade your URL in webmaster/blog and other forums. Webmasters usually have the toolbar installed. You’ll get webmasters to visit your website and offer useful feedback. It’s also a good way to give back to the community if you have useful articles to share with others.
5. Write an article that is related to webmasters. This can fall in the category of domain and SEO, two fields in which most webmasters will have the Alexa toolbar installed. Promote your content on social networking websites and webmaster forums.
6. Install Alexa widget. Some bloggers say this help them with Alexa ranking but some people say it doesn’t matter whether you have an Alexa widget or not. I guess I have to try it to see if it does work or not.
7. Use Social Networking/Bookmarking sites. This usually brings good numbers of visitors to your website and it will have a positive impact on your Alexa Rank. Naturally, you’ll need to develop a link worthy material. Try Digg, Reddit and Stumble Upon.
8. Create an Alexa category on your blog and use it to include any articles or news about Alexa. This acts as an easily accessible resource for webmasters or casual search visitors while helping you rank in the search engines.
If you got any Alexa tips to add please don’t hesitate to add it on the comment box below. Looking forward for your comments.

I like the last idea 8. Create an Alexa category on your blog. I guess it depends on the niche of your blog though. I read something about adding a widget to your site the other day and put that on for a while. It said how it can help when people click on it. Hope I get in the top 100k
Back then my Alexa rank jumped from millions to around 250,000 when I joined Entrecard.com blogging community. It’s now around 65K. However, it doesn’t seem to be so effective anymore since Alexa nowadays also counts the bounce rate (from what people say, not sure if it’s true or not).
But you still probably want to try joining Entrecard anyway. I’ve got some intro guides about them on my blog
Good luck

You are doing a great job. Looks like you have climbed up to 4 million now. I didn’t even realise that by installing the toolbar will make a difference. Thanks for the tip.

@Klaus: Yes it’s more targeted traffic. But I jumped from almost 17 million to less than 3 million now in just 4 days. I am not sure if all these visits from fellow bloggers has toolbar installed in their computers.
@Michael: Thanks for the visit. I’ll give Entrecard a shot, going to your blog now.
@Sarah: Thank you for the encouragement. Yes install the toolbar and you will probably make an improvement in your Alexa ranking.
Update: Almost another 2 million gained. I’m now at 2,824,783. 1.8 million to go with 26 days left. Right on schedule.
Alexa is great when you’re trying to sell a site or even direct ads because advertisers and site buyers are known to look at that as an important factor… other than that I don’t think there’s any major benefit to lowering your rank.

Your Alexa rank is also visible, along with Google PageRank in the SEOQuake Toolbar that works well with Firefox…
Thanks for dropping by and for the tip Henrik.
Some great tips there. My Alexa rank has been falling like crazy for the last few months following a healthy rise. Your aim to get under 1m in a month is ambitious but I wish you luck. Judging by the popularity of many of your posts you might just do it. I notice you’re at 1,664,318 at the moment so you’re doing really well. I’m off to get the toolbar.
I’ve followed these tips I’ve mentioned in my article and my Alexa ranking goes from almost 17 million to 1.6 million in just 8 days. I still have 22 days to go to make it under 1 million to reach my target.

The last time i posted my rank was 26,800,294, now its 26,901,866… maybe because my site crashed a couple of days ago… Who’s to blame?

Just an update, my current Alexa Ranking right now is 1,039,502.
39k to go
Up to 1,039,502 is another huge leap forward. Surely you’re only a few day away from making your target now. Your Alexa rank has increased so much you might have to revise your target to 500,000 in a month?
Thanks for dropping by again Chris.
Yes another big improvement. Since I posted this article, I started following all the 8 tips above and on the 2nd day alone, my Alexa ranking improved by 8 million. I’ll stick to my target of 1 million and just set another one after I achieved it in maybe a few hours from now.
BTW, I can see you got lots of freebies in your website. Nice!
Today I’ve checked my Alexa Ranking and it says 982,180
I have reached my target of less than 1 million Alexa ranking in a month with 17 days to spare. It took 13 days to go from 16,966,271 to 982,180. I think I need to set another goal. Maybe 500,000 in 1 month from today.

Regardless on what site you rank high as long as you have the right traffic then your site is good.
You are right Janice but people don’t have ways to check your site traffic. Alexa is a way of checking your stats/popularity that can be seen by anyone.
